Growing up in Salina, never dreaming I’d have a career in the visual arts, the terra cotta tiles on the United Building exterior transfixed me every time we drove by in the family station wagon. They were a constant “head turner” for me. Now, nearly sixty years later, given the opportunity of this project for the 50th Anniversary of the Smoky Hill River Festival, this woodcut print is a sincere attempt to say thank you to that town that raised me. – Jim Sherraden, Nashville, TN

The Process of Woodcuts
Woodcut printmaking is a relief process where an artist carves an image into a wood block, cutting away the areas that should stay white. Ink is then rolled onto the raised surface, and paper is pressed against the block to transfer the image. Artists often print multiple proofs to adjust carving and inking. For multi-color prints, separate blocks (or careful registration methods) are used so each color aligns consistently across the edition.
